What is GEAR UP?

GEAR UP is an exciting resource for middle-school and high school students, families and schools. We currently serve 8th-11th graders.   As a GEAR UP school district, our students will receive many resources and services through high school to help them prepare for success in life after high school and in college.   Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a program initiated through the U.S. Department of Education.  GEAR UP programs can be found in 48 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Palau, and Puerto Rico.  Our GEAR UP is made possible through a partnership with Appalachian State University. The grant funding the GEAR UP project serves 11 counties in Western North Carolina.

The objectives of GEAR UP include helping students become college ready by focusing on:

                Academics:

Enhance academic performance and preparation for further education

               Support:

Increase family knowledge of educational options beyond high school and how to prepare for college

                Skills:

Enrichment activities to support life and school success

Some of our activities include providing tutors to assist with classwork, professional development for teachers, college visits, tours and field trips to explore career and college options.
